This ones going to be a quickie. In Legends the Emperor had his own detachment of Royal Guard piloted Tie/in Interceptors. Now those interceptors are sweet because they are crimson red and have those cool maneuvering fins. Whats stupid though is that they are supposedly piloted by Royal Guardsmen.
This seems to be one of those tropes that we see a lot of in action movies where the hero can be an expert at everything and can even fly a fighter like an ace. I'll call this the Jame Bond effect. In the real world it takes years of training to become a fighter pilot and then the pilot must always be training or flying missions to keep those skills up. It also takes years of training and to become a top level soldier that can be counted on as the best bodyguard in the galaxy. You can be one but not both.

Royal Fighter Corp TIE/D |
In my new canon Royal Guards are just that Guards to the Emperor who of course can be rotated into combat units of commandos to keep up their battle ratings. The Royal detachment of star fighters are just that members of the Imperial Naval strike craft corp who are there to protect the Emperor and the assets that would need a royal fighter detachment protecting them. These Pilots would probably be rated as top in their class and would be rotated into line fighter wings from time to time to keep up their combat ratings.
