Anaxes War College
A problem for any naval buff who enjoys sci fi naval combat is the bastardization of ship titles like dreadnought, cruisers, destroyers etc. Now normally when talking about a medium sized space warship its generally called a star cruiser. The problem though lies in that star destroyers are generally larger than star cruisers yet they should be smaller when looking at modern naval terminology. When we look at actual Star Wars dreadnoughts then the Star Destroyer really acts in the role of a modern naval destroyer when escorting but we find the problem that they also act as though they are performing the role of cruisers when dreadnoughts are not present. I propose that we can marry both ideas together by stating that the preexisting Anaxes War College system in star wars exists due to the Russan Reformation putting naval shipbuilding limitations into effect that caused navies to have all kinds of classifications for ships of particular tonnage.
My new tweeked universe explanation goes like this. After the battle of Russan the Republic had massive disarmements and limits placed onto all new naval assets. All member worlds would be forced to conform to these limits as well unless a world is deemed to be strategically "to big to fail" in which these key world may have larger and more powerful system defense forces that can exceed the treity limits however there would be a limit put onto the hyperdrive these vessels may be outfitted with so that they would have an extremely limited range therefore making it near impossible for the few true dreadnoughts left in the galaxy.
The planet Anaxes was well known for its naval acadamy. The greatest naval admirals for systemfleets would have been educated at Anaxes for the thousand years between Russan and the start of the Clone Wars. The War College of Anaxes a think tank of the galaxies greatest fleetmasters would have created many of the naval doctrines used during the Clone Wars and shaped the very way fleets were operated. For this the war college created a standardized ship classification system to organize the new fleets that were being built free from the limits placed on them during the great peace after Russan.
Vessels that would have carried the role of Cruiser during the days of the naval limits never ranged above a kilometer in length and became the most common main battle line capitol ship. After the limits were removed the classification system left ships in this weight class as is and placed destroyers in the tonnage above them. Therefore the role of cruiser and destroyer were switched with the Anaxes War College System.
Strike Craft
These would include all Fighters, bombers, shuttles Small craft with crews of no more than five personnel. They will have very few crew accommodation and need to be stationed on a base or mother ship for most long term operations
Examples: TIE/ln, TIE/sa, Skipray Blastboat, ARC 170, Lambda Class Shuttle, Nu Class Assault Shuttle, TIE/D,
Patrol Craft
These craft are used for inter system and planetary patrols as well as supporting greater fleet elements. They are not line combat craft and would not engage larger fleet elements. Sizes will vary from 15 to 100 meters in length with small crews and enough accommodation for only a few months of operations maximum.
Examples: Gozanti Class, IPV-1 System Patrol Boat, VT-49 Decimator Patrol Boat, Guardian Class Customs Boat.
Corvettes
These ships are the smallest level of capitol ships and also the smallest to sit in the order of battle. Corvettes will range from 100 to 200 meters in length. Most corvettes of the fleet generally operate independently or in a skirmish line on the outskirts of the main battle line.
Examples: Raider Class Corvette, CR 93 Assassin Corvette, Vigil Class Corvette.
Escorts
These vessels will mostly escort larger capitol ships or escort civilian vessels from minor threats such as star fighters and bombers or light pirate forces. They would range from 200 to 400 meters in length. Most escorts will have external fighter racks but a few may have internal hangars. Escorts are commonly found within picket lines as well as covering vulnerable spots within the main battle line while being protected themselves by the heavier vessels within the battle line.
Examples: Nebulon B Escort. Arquiten Class Heavy Escort, Pelta Class Support Escort, Lancer Class Escort
Frigates
These ships were the first ships would stand in the close support line or even in the main battle line depending on the size of the fleet they are deployed in. Frigates range in between 400 and 600 meters in length. Most frigates have their own internal hangar bays being able to carry small compliments of strike craft. Frigates would carry a large array of weapons as well as fast speed to attack larger capitol ships soft less protected flanks as well as being able to avoid the heavier fire from heavier fleet elements.
Examples: Strike Class Frigate, Gladiator Class Frigate, Broadside Class Frigate.
Cruisers
Imperial cruisers fill the role of both escorts for heavier class vessels as well as lead ships in their own task forces. Cruisers will bristle with a respectable array of weaponry which allows them to fight within the main battle line or be the heavy guns of the close support line. Nearly all cruisers have an internal hangar bay with a medium sized strike craft wing. Cruisers range between 600 and 900 meters in length.
Examples: Vindicator Class Cruiser, Acclamator Class Cruiser, Immobolizer 418 Class Cruiser, Dreadnaught Class Cruiser
Destroyers
The main stay of the Imperial starfleet the Star Destroyer is known through out the galaxy as a warship which bristles with weapons emplacements and can bring a fleet of strike craft into battle. Resting in the middle of the main battle line these vessels are the backbone of most fleets and have the ability to command dozens of smaller support ships around them. Star Destroyers are fearsome when combined in a fleet or when operating independently showing the Imperial flag to the million worlds of the Empire. These massive vessels span from 900 meters to 2.2 Kilometers in length.
Examples: Imperator Class Star Destroyer, Venator Class Star Destroyer, Victory Class Star Destroyer, Secutor Class Star Destroyer.
Battle Cruisers
Battle Cruisers which had not been in use for the thousand years of peace found their way back into the use of the Imperial Navy. Their massive size means they can bring hundred to thousands of weapons to bear on any target and can command squadrons of destroyers and cruisers to form impressive battle fleets. Battle Cruisers were battle lines all unto themselves.
Sizes span from 2.2 to 5 kilometers.
Examples: Allegiance Class Battle Cruiser, Resurgent Class Battle Cruiser, Praetor Class Battle Cruiser
Dreadnoughts
The Star Dreadnought is the ultimate capitol ship spanning from 5 to 20 kilometers. These vessels highhandedly would wielded the same firepower of lesser fleets as well as consumed the same number of resources. Dreadnoughts would be able to smash through nearly all fleets and were ideal for planetary bombardments. Star Dreadnoughts had the capabilities to deploy enormous amounts of strike craft and had the facilities to service smaller capitol ships. Star Dreadnoughts are the backbone to any heavy assault battle line which may consist of several dreadnoughts and are only seen at the most important strategic locations.
Examples: Executor Class Star Dreadnought, Eclipse Class Star Dreadnought, Assertor Class Star Dreadnought, Bellator Class Star Dreadnought, Mandator Class Star Dreadnought
