Imperial Military Branches
I have found that the canonical structure of the Imperial military is too convoluted with the purpose of the 3 main branches. I really find no problem with the Imperial Army or the Imperial Navy but I find the problem lies with the Stormtrooper Corps.
Problems With the Stormtrooper Corps
The Stormtrooper Corps was designed to be a cross between the United States Marine Corps and the SS. Being that the SS was politically reliable and answered only to the Fuhrer much like how the stormtroopers were supposedly only answerable to the Emperor. Also they seem to be like the United States Marine Corps due to them being mostly deployed from the Navy and being used in boarding actions. Why this is a problem is because over the years we have seen very little of the Imperial Army and pretty much all ground actions being conducted by the stormtroopers. From a movie going experience it makes sense to make the Imperial ground troops stormtroopers as they are one of the most iconic images from the Star Wars series. But if you look at it in universe this makes little sense as most ground troops should belong to the Imperial Army. My solution is to roll the stormtrooper Corps into the Imperial Army as just the standard Infantry. This would allow for us to explain why all ground actions are conducted by stromtroopers while the armoured corps would wear the more plain coveralls and be the ones who were driving the walkers.
Winning the hearts and minds of the citizens.
Imperial Navy
The role of the Imperial Navy changes little from what is existent in cannon . The navies roles include space lane patrols, ship to ship combat, transport of army units, planetary defense, planetary assault, support of army units, space lane and planetary blockade and interdiction. The Imperial navy would have its own fighter and strike craft units independent of the armies. The navy would not have its own independent branch of marines but instead just small numbers of security personnel like the black shirted Death Star Troopers seen in A New Hope. Most ships of the line would carry detachments of army stormtroopers whom would be more geared towards naval duties mainly lighter armour and fewer heavy weapons, more suited for keeping a ship intact. These units would be used for shore missions or quick strikes much like the detachment of troopers on Tatooine in A New Hope or even the troopers used by the First Order in the strike on the village on Jakku in The Force Awakens.

Imperial Army
The Imperial Army is the branch that does so much but is given so little love. It's main role is to hold planets via garrison but would also carryout the role of planetary assaults and invasions. The army would need to have a symbiotic relationship with the navy due to the fact that it would have no ability to get from planet to planet. Hence the need for stormtroopers being attached to the navy. This would create the co dependence on each other which would allow the two branches to cooperate with each other on equal ground. The army would have its own sub branch of fighter and strike craft specifically for the use in supporting the army in missions as well as defending planetary and system assets.
It was a dark and stormy night
In Conclusion
The current canon subdividing the Imperial Military creates a needless mess that is easily solved by rolling the stormtroopers into the army as well as creating an equality between the two remaining branches as the navy can't take planets without the army and the army can't move without the aide of the navy. This would also assure that neither branch is able to carry out an effective coupe without the cooperation with the other branch which makes the likely hood of this happening relatively remote. Any lack in politically loyal troops can be easily solved by adding political officers to the command structure as well as using a % of troopers as clones. Clones would always be counted on as loyal as we saw during the Clone Wars as nearly all stayed loyal to the Empire after order 66 was carried out and the Republic transformed into the Empire.
